Why Black Soldier Flies?
The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is a powerful ally in agriculture and waste management. These insects are remarkably efficient at converting organic waste into high-protein animal feed and organic fertilizer. By feeding on food and agricultural waste, BSF larvae break down material that would otherwise end up in landfills, emitting harmful greenhouse gases. As they mature, the larvae are harvested to create organic fertilizer, while some are processed as sustainable protein sources for animal feed.
A Circular Economy Approach
Our BSF program champions the principles of a circular economy by transforming waste into value. The waste collected for BSF farms is sourced from urban and agricultural settings, reducing the pressure on local landfills and mitigating the associated methane emissions. The outcome is twofold: first, the larvae produce a rich organic fertilizer that enhances soil fertility and crop yield without relying on synthetic chemicals; second, the protein-rich larvae provide an alternative to traditional animal feed sources, which often involve unsustainable land use.

Agape Innovations empowers communities to participate in BSF farming, where they can earn income by selling organic waste to BSF farms or supplying larvae back to us. This system enables people to earn from what would otherwise be waste, all while contributing to environmental preservation. Additionally, with Uganda’s urban waste issues, including past tragedies in Kiteezi, the BSF program provides a sustainable waste management solution that prevents the dangerous accumulation of garbage.
