Empowering Farmers, Transforming Agriculture.

Non-communicable diseases in Uganda, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory conditions, have tended to increase, raising a significant public health challenge. According to the WHO, NCDs account for 33% of all deaths in Uganda; a factor that is likely to rise with changing lifestyles, environment, and dietary pattern. The environmental contributors to the causation of NCDs encompass pesticide exposure, which has been linked to several chronic health problems. A promising solution in this respect is the transition to organic farming, where natural inputs replace chemical pesticides and fertilizers in promoting environmental and human health.
This article looks at how organic farming, especially in the use of organic inputs, can enhance food security and biodiversity conservation while reducing the emerging burden of non-communicable diseases in Uganda.
The Link Between Pesticides and NCDs
More and more research is beginning to link pesticide exposure with increased risks of NCDs, therefore making conventional farming practices a health concern both for farmers and consumers. Pesticides are applied to crops for the control of pests and diseases, but many contain active ingredients that are harmful to human health. The World Health Organization estimated in 2018 that long-term exposure to pesticides is linked with an increased risk for several Non-Communicable Diseases, most especially cancers and neurological disorders.
The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health reported in 2018 that chronic exposure to chemical pesticides may increase the risk for cancers like lymphoma, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. These results are particularly significant for Uganda, as many farmers and consumers face contact with pesticide residues through polluted food and water.
Exposure to pesticides is also associated with cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and respiratory problems, which worsen the mortality burden attributable to NCDs. Indeed, this is a serious threat in rural Uganda because of the direct exposures farmers face during the application of noxious chemicals.
Exposure to chronic pesticides has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and is on the rise across the globe, including for individuals living in rural agricultural areas.
The Organic Advantage: Reducing Pesticide Exposure
The transition into organic farming provides a feasible avenue toward reducing pesticide exposure and its associated NCD risks. Organic farming methodologies involve using natural inputs like compost, animal manure, and biological pest control while avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals.
A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives in 2017 shows that consumption of organic produce reduces pesticide residues in the body. Indeed, the results of the study indicated that those participants who consumed organic food had lower levels of synthetic pesticide exposure, translating into reduced health risks associated with NCDs.
Another study published in Environmental Research in 2019 showed that individuals eating organic produce had exposure to pesticides reduced by 90%. With the increased use of pesticides in farming in Uganda, promoting organic farming is a sure way to reduce harmful chemicals in the food chain.
Key Organic Farming Benefits:
Organic Farming and Soil Health: A Foundation for Disease Prevention
Besides reducing pesticide exposure, organic farming builds healthy soils-an indirect cause of disease prevention. Wholesome soils support nutritious crops that translate to better nutrition in the long run, a critical component in preventing NCDs like obesity, diabetes, and heart diseases. In Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment, 2019 also noted that organic farming raises soil biodiversity by 30% and boosts organic carbon in the soils by 20%, leading to much healthier ecosystems that can sustainably support food production.
Fertility Soil and Nutrition of Crops: Organic farming does not incorporate the use of chemical inorganic inputs, hence improving the fertility of the soil, and increasing crop nutritional value. Wholesome nutrition, which organic produce is highly instrumental in providing, helps control diseases such as diabetes and heart conditions now at large in Uganda due to poor eating habits and nutrition.
Insect Farming: Complementing Organic Farming
Besides organic inputs, the farming of insects is also an emerging complementary sustainable practice to organic agriculture. This shall be performed through rearing insects like black soldier flies, which, upon hatching into larvae, are made available for protein feeding of livestock, hence reducing the need for chemically intensive feeds in the livestock feed-producing industries. This approach does not only prevent environmental degradation but also helps reduce health hazards that emanate from conventional farming.
Policy and Investment Contributions to Organic Farming
Organic farming and insect farming will require policy and investment support to realize full health benefits in Uganda. This the Ugandan government, in collaboration with international organizations and research bodies, can foster through:
Financial incentives granted to farmers for organic fertilizers, compost, and natural pest control methods could be one way to entice farmers from using harmful chemical pesticides.
Farmers must be trained regarding organic farming methods, composting, crop rotation, and biological pest control to institute these procedures.
Invest in agricultural research into organic and insect farming technologies that can improve productivity and profitability for sustainable farming. Such collaboration with academic institutions could offer innovative solutions that address Uganda’s particular needs in agriculture.
Enlighten farmers on regulations and processes on the certification programs for organic produce in Uganda will assure consumers of quality, and therefore, in turn, increase consumer protection. This will increase market demand for organic products with further incentives for farmers to produce organically.
