Turning Kampala’s Waste into an Organic Fertilizer

Kampala, the capital of Uganda is overwhelmed by the mounting menace of waste. With more than 100 markets serving over 6 million people daily with 0.56 kilograms of waste per person per day, the city generates an immense amount of organic waste that burdens landfills and has contributed to environmental degradation immensely. The massive volumes of organic waste that the landfills cannot possibly manage, thereby seriously degrading the environment. Recently, this issue reached a tragic peak with the landfill landslide in Kitezi, Kampala, which claimed the lives of over 20 people, with more still missing to date. Many lives have been derailed, and some will take long to heal from the devastating event. This pointed to the urgent need for sustainable waste management solutions and seems to be far from now. It also points out our vision for creating a sustainable agricultural and environmental solution, contributing to key urgent national and global goals; it describes the scale of this project, partnership requirements, and alignment with key development strategies.

Agape Innovations looks at this challenge as a chance to make a difference. We are converting a substantial part of Kampala’s organic waste into 100% organic fertilizer, a product that is cheap but will guarantee sustainable agriculture. We desire to help mitigate the garbage problem in this city while at the same time supplying farmers with quality organic fertilizers that shall lead to soil health improvement, sustainable farming, and a clean, healthy environment.

The Agape Organic Fertilizer Solution

1. Managing Waste

Kampala city generates over 28,000 tons of solid waste each month, Kampala’s waste is made up of 92.1% organic material, 1.8% hard plastic, 1.3% paper, 3.0% soft plastic, 0.6% glass, 0.5% textile and leather, and 0.6% others. This ends up in dump sites, which are already overcrowded, thus causing environmental hazards like the Kitezi disaster. We will reduce drastically the amount of waste reaching the landfills when organic waste is transformed into fertilizer. By doing this, we are reducing chances of future risks and leaving the city cleaner. This project adds to the fulfillment of two of the identified SDGs, which are SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). 2. Creating Affordable and Sustainable Fertilizer

Agape Organic Fertilizer is made from organic waste emanating from markets, households, and other sources. Our fertilizer is 100% organic, yet more affordable than chemical alternatives, which gives smallholder farmers who cannot afford the high costs of agricultural inputs access to them. Farmers will also increase their yields, improve soil fertility, and decrease their reliance on harmful chemical fertilizers with the use of our product.

• Promote Sustainable Farming Practices

While chemical fertilizers work well, they slowly destroy the soil’s structure and contribute to environmental pollution. Our organic fertilizer helps reverse this trend by encouraging sustainable farming practices that improve soil structure and nutrient availability and promote biodiversity. In line with Uganda’s National Development Plan IV goal of fostering Human Capital Development, this solution contributes toward healthier soils, better agricultural outputs, and improved livelihoods for farmers across the country.

• Scaling Up from 2,500 to 250,000 Tonnes Annually

Currently, Agape Innovations is at a production capacity of 2,500 tonnes of organic fertilizer per year but has a serious vision to double the production to reach 250,000 tonnes annually. Therefore, we remain on the lookout for increased partnerships with government agencies, environmental organizations, and international contributors. Partnerships are critical in ensuring that we maintain adequate technical expertise, funding, and infrastructure necessary in the large-scale collection, processing, and distribution of organic fertilizer.

This focus also aligns with Uganda’s Vision 2040 of transforming Uganda from an economic status of a low-income to an upper-middle-income country through industrialization and sustainable development. By scaling up, we also want to contribute to Uganda’s Green Growth Strategy, which focuses on sustainable waste management, climate resilience, and the enhancement of agricultural productivity.

• Employment Creation and Community Development

In addition to the environmental and agricultural benefits, scaling our production of Agape Organic Fertilizer will have deep impacts on employment and community development. We are going to create hundreds of jobs in waste collection, processing, distribution, and farming support services as we expand our operations. This falls in line with NDP IV’s focus on job creation, particularly among women and the youth, through environmentally friendly industries.

• Global Impact Meeting SDGs and Climate Goals

At the global level, our work contributes to several SDGs, among them:

1. SDG 13, Climate Action Through our technology that converts organic waste into fertilizer, we reduce methane emissions in landfills, promote climate-friendly farming practices that can pull carbon into the soil.
2. SDG 2, Zero Hunger Our cost-effective fertilizer increases agricultural productivity to help farmers grow more food as a means of achieving national food security.
3. SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth: We are creating sustainable jobs besides growing the economy through the development of Uganda’s green economy.
4. We also contribute toward the climate goals of the Paris Agreement in general, reducing overall emissions from waste, while our organic inputs lower the carbon footprint of agriculture.

• A Tested Model for Large-Scale Impact

With over 1 million farmers currently benefiting from our products and services, Agape Innovations has a proven and scalable model. Its technical experience in the management of waste and organic fertilizer production places it at the forefront in the production of sustainable agricultural solutions.
